ServiceNow had its worst day on record, after beating its own guide

by BigWavesAlso available in Chinese · switch language in the footer

The claim. ServiceNow is not being priced on the quarter it just reported. It is being priced on whether AI shrinks how much companies pay for software, and one soft forward number was enough to take 27% off the stock in a day.

NOW's biggest one-day drops since 2016, with today's drop at the top, and five takeaways Caption: today's bar is the 2:51 pm ET trade against Wednesday's close. The next-worst day, Apr 23, was also an earnings reaction.

How we measured it

Prices are Alpaca SIP daily closes, split-adjusted, from January 2016, plus the trade at 2:51 pm ET on Oct 29, 2026. Our data does not reach back to the 2012 listing; the "worst since listing" count is Benzinga's and MarketWatch's, and it agrees with ours from 2016 on. Results and guidance are as reported by Seeking Alpha, GuruFocus and Benzinga on Oct 28-29.

Why

  1. It is the biggest drop on record. NOW traded 27.4% below Wednesday's $150.13 close. The previous record, -17.7% on Apr 23, came after the April report. Volume was about four times its 50-day average.
  2. The forward number slowed. Contracted revenue due in the next 12 months (cRPO) grew 21% to $13.65B, above expectations. ServiceNow guided next quarter to 18.5%, against about 19.8% expected. The CFO said early renewals supplied about half of this quarter's beat, which borrows from the next one.
  3. The quarter itself was fine, apart from the debt. Revenue was $4.11B, up 20.5%, against $4.09B expected. Adjusted EPS of $1.00 missed by two cents because interest expense rose to $81M from $6M after about $9.2B of acquisitions this year, including Armis. There were no buybacks in the quarter.
  4. The AI numbers went up and did not help. The 2026 target for AI contract value rose to $1.7B from $1.5B (it started the year at $1B), and the free cash flow margin target rose to 36%. Investors weighed the AI growth against the slowdown in contracts and sided with the slowdown.
  5. It undid a rally and hit the group. NOW rose 88% from the Apr 23 close to its Oct 23 high of $158.96 and is now 31% below that high and 29% down this year, while the software ETF IGV is up 1.5%. IGV fell 4.2% today, Salesforce 4.7% and Workday 4.8%.

What we expect

  • Base case (to Nov 27, 20 sessions): a partial rebound, as most analysts kept Buy ratings with targets of $150-201. NOW closes Nov 27 above $109.05, its price at 2:51 pm ET on Thursday. Signal: no close below $109.05 through Nov 5, and IGV holding above $107.
  • Alternative: the market keeps treating seat-based software as an AI casualty. NOW closes Nov 27 below $109.05. Signal: IGV falls further next week while NOW makes a new low.

History leans slightly to a bounce, but not by much. Of NOW's seven other drops of 10% or more since 2016, five were higher five sessions later. Twenty sessions later, four of the seven were higher (median +11%), but the three that were not lost 8-13% more. That is close to the 60% of all 20-day stretches that end higher.

What would change our mind

  • The next cRPO print. If January's report shows cRPO growth at or above the 18.5% guide, today's drop priced a slowdown that did not come. Below 18%, the slowdown is real.
  • Peers' contract numbers. Workday reports in late November and Salesforce in early December. If their forward bookings hold up, this is a ServiceNow problem, not a software one.
